WARDIA: Legacy of Trees
Game Programmer - Technical Game Designer

Developed for the course "Online Game Design" @Università degli Studi di Milano

In this project me and my team were given some constraints to design and develop a game, in particular it should have been set in a nature-based story involving mages and the gameplay should have been an online multiplayer turn-based strategy game for casual gamers.

Starting from these constraints we've done several brainstorms and developed the idea to make a mobile turn-based strategy game based on cards in which two factions are clashing with each other: after composing their Roster, players can choose a side and compete in 1vs1 matches against other players.
To make this more intriguing we also wrote a complete story of the world and complete descriptions of the units we created.

Gameplay
The gameplay is very simple and combines a turn-based strategy game, a card game and an auto-chess game; the player can unlock cards, compose a Roster and use it in battle by placing the cards on a board. Every turn the units placed will move and attack other units automatically. The match ends when all the Control points in the board (the Trees) have been conquered or the turn 20 has been reached.
Every card is unique and has its own cost, abilities and strengths and we included a rank system for competitive matches too. We've also made a complete business plan and an economy management in the game: players can buy coins with real money to unlock new cards, skins and tags.

Development
Everything was made in Unity,  using standard assets from the store (sadly, apart from the concept arts, used in the trailer or the presentation, we didn't have an artist for the game assets, including sprites or 3d models).
The timeframe was about 3 months, some fixes were added later in order to submit it for the NGD 2022.

We've written a complete Game Design Document and a Technical Design Document for the costs estimation and the android APK of the prototype is available.
We've made also a Concept Trailer (pre-prototype) and a presentation pitch (both of max 1 min as constraint).

The prototype was candidate for the New Game Designer 2022 and positively evaluated by a commission of developers and publishers including Ubisoft, Nintendo, Digital Tales, EDI and Milestone. The game still needs several fixes to be released in particular a unique art direction for game assets, the introduction of more units, tags and skin systems and testing of ranks and levels.
